How can I store sharp knives in my RV kitchen? (December 27, 1999)
We know of three simple, compact, light-weight solutions:
- I rescued a piece of Styrofoam packing material, cut it to be a little longer and wider
than our biggest knife, and pushed each knife into the end of the rigid foam block (the
knife easily cuts its own storage groove as you push it in). It lies neatly in a drawer
and holds all of our sharp knives. (At this point in time, we had four knives, ranging
from a long carving knife to a tiny paring knife). We used this for over a year with
no problem.
- Using cardboard, cut a piece slightly longer than the blade and wide enough to fold
once. Once folded and with the knife inside, wrap the cardboard with duct tape (one more
use for this stuff!). Makes a great sheath. It has worked out well for both storage and
handling (out to the picnic table, etc). {from "Carter" carters@thegrid.net}
- At Camping World (800)-626-5944, we discovered a light weight plastic knife holder for mounting on a wall. (Item 13285, $5.37, on page 164 of the 1999 master catalog). It requires about a square foot of wall space in the kitchen, and holds seven knives. I was initially a little worried that the knives would bounce out while traveling, but in fact they've stayed firmly in place over some rather rough highways. We've now been using this for over a year with no problem. We like this solution best of all, because the knives are always instantly visible and accessible. But of course you have to have the wall space available (or it could be mounted to the inside of a cabinet door).
